How exterior waterproofing works
The contractor digs down along the foundation, cleans the wall, applies a waterproof membrane or coating, and usually installs drain pipe at the footing before backfilling. Water is stopped before it ever touches the inside of the wall.
Pros and trade-offs
It addresses the problem at the source and protects the wall itself, which is why it's often recommended for serious or long-standing leaks. It's also more disruptive: landscaping, walkways and decks along the wall may need to come out, and access can be limited on tight lots.
What to ask
Which walls need work, how they'll restore the yard, where the footing drain will discharge, and how the price compares with an interior drainage system for your basement.
Before you choose a contractor
Confirm that the proposed work addresses the observed source of moisture. Ask about inspection fees, permits, exclusions, cleanup, discharge routing and warranty terms. Verify applicable credentials and insurance independently.
